Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13yr old who recently died due to repeated sexual abuse from both her Uncle and Cousin. She was diagnosed of Vesico-vaginal fistula (VVW) and was bed-ridden for 2months before she finally gave up the ghost.
Charges have been equally amended from rape to criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, following the victim’s death.
Although, the son of the principal suspect, Victor, who joined in the abuse is said to be on the run and the police have mounted a manhunt for him. Further Court sitting had been slated for the 29th of next month.
So our goal is to give Ochanya and all those going through sexual abuse one way or the other A VOICE.
Ochanya is one victim amongst many. Any one can fall a victim to child abuse, rape, domestic violence. Male and female.
We shouldn't treat this with levity. We should rise up and join hands to fight.
Rape and sexual violence are harder to stop because most sexual assaults and rapes are committed by someone the victim knows.
On top of this, the vast majority of victims do not report perpetrators to the police.
While other victims are frightened of not being believed, negative social attitudes to rape and sexual assault victims play a big part in the reluctance of women to come forward. We must monitor any behavioural change in family members and friends.
Some mothers and family members know that their kids are being molested but they keep quiet because most of the perpetrators are bread winners.
Those who keep quiet are just as guilty as the perpetrators and they all belong in jail.
Rape is an inhuman act. Every man must take an oath to protect and defend women and children, boys and girls.
Sexual assault continues to be our worst nightmare.
We must not allow evil prevail over good when we can speak up for our voices to be heard.

This is the right time to speak up.
